How to get to the Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls is the largest national park in Uganda and easy to reach. Take a flight or a vehicle from Entebbe or Kampala.

The park has multiple gates, making entry convenient. The roads to Murchison are good. You will enjoy the 305km road trip.

Enter by the southern gates if you come in from Kampala. The northern gates are further away. They open to the best parts of the Murchison Falls National Park.

Chartered flights from Kampala and Entebbe are even more convenient. A tour guide will arrange everything.

 

What to wear while on Safari in Murchison Falls National Park

Uganda is generally warm. There is always the possibility of rain. Wear comfortable, breathable, light clothing. A rain jacket will come in handy in case of a flash shower.

Hiking boots will keep your feet warm and comfortable. Wear a hat and long sleeves for your skin.

A sturdy backpack will hold your essentials – sunscreen, camera, and binoculars.

Avoid bright colors which might affect the wild animals.

 

When to Visit Murchison Falls

Choose somewhere in December, January, or February. Thin undergrowth makes everything easier. Walking, driving, and boating activities are easier too.

Tours are easier when you are not being rained on. The mosquitoes are fewer at this time, too.

Accommodation will cost you anywhere between $40 and $500 per night. There is something for everyone.

 

 

Murchison Falls Attractions

  • The clash of water against rock, the dramatic descent, and the sheer volume of water passing through such a small crevice is something to behold.

 

The dramatic roar of the water falling into a small pool 50m wide is deafening. The spray of water droplets is unforgettable.

 

  • Source of the Nile – Jinja is a tourist town famous for being the source of this iconic river. The Nile River goes through Murchison Falls National Park.
  • Enjoy the beginnings of the river Nile. A launch trip down the waterfall leads to animal and bird sightings. This happens twice a day at 9am and 4pm. You can also travel downstream on a boat towards Lake Albert.
  • Murchison offers excellent game viewing. A game drive will take you through savanna country, woodlands, acacia plantations, and rivers. There are 76 different mammals and 450 different types of birds. The mammals include hippos, elephants, buffaloes, lions, giraffes, and baboons.
  • Budongo forest and Kniyo Pabidi forest are teeming with hundreds of butterfly species, two dozen mammals, 460 types of trees, and 360 bird types. Bird watch at the famous ‘royal mile.’
  • Murchison is also a good place to go chimpanzee trekking and generally observe primates.
  • Explore the last mahogany forest in Uganda.
