Combining Kenya’s premier safari destinations with the remarkable experience of gorilla trekking, this 12-day itinerary offers some of East Africa’s finest wildlife encounters.
The journey begins with a scenic flight to Samburu, where game drives reveal rare northern species, reticulated giraffe, elephant, and leopard, against the striking backdrop of the Ewaso Nyiro River.
From Samburu, a flight to the Masai Mara opens up vast savannahs and reliable Big Five sightings, with the possibility of witnessing the Great Migration depending on the season.
The itinerary then shifts to Rwanda, with time in Kigali before venturing into the Virunga Mountains for the centrepiece of the trip, gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park. Guided through dense rainforest by experienced trackers, coming face to face with a mountain gorilla family is an encounter that few wildlife experiences can match.

Days 1-2 | Samburu: The Land of the Special Five
Day 1: Nairobi – Arrival: Meet & Greet
Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, you will be met by our representative who will transfer you to Hotel for overnight stay.
Overnight: Giraffe Manor/Hemingways
Meal plan: Full Board/Bed & Breakfast
Day 2: Nairobi – Day tour
Have breakfast at the hotel with the giraffes. Spend this day visit Giraffe Centre & David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage.

Day 3 | Lake Nakuru: A Sanctuary for Rhinos
Day 3: Nairobi – Transfer to Samburu by flight
You will be driven to Nairobi’s Wilson Airport for a morning flight to Samburu National Reserve. Be met at the airstrip by camp’s guide and be transferred to the camp with a game drive en route. After lunch there will be an afternoon game drive.
Overnight: Sasaab/Elephant Bedroom

Days 4-6 | Masai Mara: The Heart of the African Wild
Day 4 & 5: Samburu – Morning and afternoon game drives
These 2 full days you will have morning and afternoon game drives.
Optional activities: Walking safaris, Samburu village visit & a visit to Reteti Elephant Orphanage
Overnight: Sasaab/Elephant Bedroom

Day 6: Samburu – Transfer to Maasai Mara by flight
After breakfast transfer to the airstrip for scheduled mid-morning flight to Maasai Mara. Be met by camp’s guide and transferred to the camp. There will be a game drive after lunch.
Overnight: Kichwa Tembo Camp/Little Governors/Angama Mara

Days 7-10 | Rwanda: Into the Mist of the Virunga Mountains
Day 7 & 8: Maasai Mara – Morning and afternoon game drives
These 2 full days have morning and afternoon game drives.
Optional activities: Walking safaris, balloon ride, Maasai Village visit and night game drives.
Overnight: Kichwa Tembo Camp/Little Governors/Angama Mara
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 9: Mara – Transfer to Nairobi – Kigali by flight
After breakfast transfer to the airstrip, depart by a mid-morning flight to Wilson Airport arriving Nairobi by 1215hrs. Be dropped off at the airport for a flight to Kigali. Arrive and be transferred to the hotel.
Overnight: The Retreat

Day 10: Kigali – Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Today you will be picked at your lodge after completing your morning breakfast, and head for a Kigali city tour and visit the Kigali genocide memorial ground, and have lunch before being transferred to Musanze near Volcanoes National Park where you will your dinner and overnight stay.

Days 11-12 | Kigali: History, Culture & End of Service
Day 11. Mountain Gorilla Tracking
Assemble at the park headquarters for a briefing in the morning together with your trekking gear and drinking water and ascend in the forest to track the gorillas on your first gorilla tracking encounter. On a gorilla safari, a reasonable degree of fitness is required as well as walking shoes, packed food and mineral water, insect repellent, sun screen and hut. The gorilla tracking experience takes half or whole day depending on the movements of these primates.

Day 12: Volcanoes – Transfer to Kigali, fly out
After having your morning breakfast, you will head for golden monkey trekking, which is almost same as gorilla trekking procedure but less hectic. Later return for lunch, before transfer to Kigali. You may have an added Kigali city tour, later have dinner, before you will be transferred to the airport to catch up with your flight.
