Lake Bunyonyi

Lake Bunyonyi is close to Uganda’s border with Rwanda. It is so deep that only two other lakes in the world are deeper.

The lovely lake is dotted with 29 islands.

Visit Bunyonyi to watch migratory birds and water birds. The terraced hills around the lake provide a sanctuary for the birds.

 

How to get to the Lake Bunyonyi

Bunyonyi is 4 miles from Kabale town. You can get there by road from Entebbbe or Kampala.  Lake Bunyonyi is near Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. You can come here to relax after hiking in Bwindi.

Lake Bunyonyi is also close to Kigali.

 

What to wear while on Safari in Lake Bunyonyi

Wear cotton. It absorbs sweat. Wear walking shoes. Protect your skin with a hat, sunscreen, and insect repellant. Don’t forget swimwear.

  • Swimming in Bunyonyi is safe because there are no hippos and no crocodiles. There is no bilharzia in Lake Bunyonyi either. Don’t swim alone in the lake and stay close to the shore or a canoe. Some resorts have swimming pools too.
  • Dine on crayfish.
  • Experience quiet with a nature walk. Enjoy the scenic lake and the villages. Don’t forget your camera.
  • Go up one of the hills for a better view of the lake.
  • Explore the village on a mountain bike. It is one way to enjoy the good weather and fresh air.
  • Go birding with a professional birding guide who will take you out on the lake. Choose between a dugout canoe or a motorized boat. Overnight lake tours are available too.
  • Cultural visits allow you to interact with the Batwa pygmy tribe or any of the villages. A guide can organize a visit to a school, a market, or a home. Learn how they trade, grow their food, and cook it.
  • One of the islands on the lake is called Punishment Island. In the past, unwed mothers were abandoned there as a punishment.
