Samburu National Reserve

Samburu seems bare at first, but it has a lot to offer. The Ewaso Ngiro river breathes so much life into this desert landscape.

Visitors can expect to see large mammals, hundreds of bird species, magnificent night skies, and camel rides in the desert.

How to get Samburu National Reserve

Samburu is a six-hour drive from Nairobi. You can drive here from Lake Nakuru too. If you want more convenience, there are flights from Nairobi to Samburu airstrip.

When to Visit Samburu

Samburu is open all year long. The dry months of October, November, December, January, February, and March offer the best game viewing. Animals huddle near water sources.

The bird watching is excellent during the rainy season. But the game viewing is not so good. It is rainy in April, May, and November. Accommodation is cheaper because guests are fewer.

What to wear to Samburu National Reserve

Samburu has a hot, desert climate. Wear light, comfortable clothing. Browns and tans will blend in better than greens.

Stick to rayon, linen, or cotton. A loose fit will be more comfortable with the heat. Protect your skin with quality sunscreen and some bug repellant.

Long sleeves and full-length pants will give you the coverage you need.

Wear comfortable shoes that allow you to walk longer if necessary. Any socks you wear should absorb sweat.
