Amboseli National Park

Amboseli has one of the largest and most famous elephant herds. Amboseli also has the highest mountain in Africa. But there is more. Go for the rhino sanctuary, superb bird watching, hippo-infested swamps, picturesque balloon safaris, and more.

How to get to the Amboseli

Amboseli is a five-hour drive away from Nairobi. Tour operators will get a car to pick you from the airport. Self-drive is an option too.

You can also get on a flight from Nairobi to Amboseli airstrip.

When to Visit Amboseli National Park

The best time to be in Amboseli is between June and October. It is dry then. The animals go into the swamps where there is a permanent water supply. Expect more traffic at this time. Book early.

January and February are less crowded. The short rains will have just ended. Avoid April and May.

What to wear in the Amboseli

Amboseli is usually hot. You want light and breathable fabrics. Pants or shorts, skirts, and dresses can work. But the more you cover your skin from the sun, the better. Wear good sunscreen and the best bug repellent.

Carry a light jacket for night game drives and early morning excursions.

Carry comfortable hiking shoes. Wear cotton socks to absorb sweat. Carry some sandals too. Wear neutral colors. Swimwear will come in handy.

Most lodges provide laundry services.
