Tsavo West National Park

Leopards, Cheetahs, Wild dogs, Buffalos, Rhinos, Lions, and Crocodiles, are just a few of our favorite things at Tsavo West National Park.

Tsavo offers the most exquisite, rugged scenery and good bird watching too.

Getting to Tsavo West National Park

There are three possible ways to get there:

  • Fly from Nairobi to an airstrip at Tsavo West on a charter flight. Ot os a 30-50 minute flight.
  • Go there by road. Drive there from Mombasa or Nairobi. Enter by the Mtito Andei or the Chyulu gate.
  • Take a train ride to Mtito Andei and then travel to Tsavo West by road from there.

A tour guide can make the arrangements for you.

When to Visit Tsavo West

Tsavo is good all year round, but the best game viewing on offer is available in July, August, September, December, January, February, and March.

Drier weather means animals gather around watering holes, becoming them easier to see. Prepare for higher temperatures in December and January.

What to wear in Tsavo West National Park

Tsavo West National Park Attractions

  • Picture millions of gallons of clean water bubbling out of larva rocks. Mzima Springs is one of the most beautiful sights on the continent.
  • Tsavo was the home of the man-eating lions that terrorized railway builders in 1898. The lions forced construction on the Uganda railway to stop.
  • Tour Shetani larva flow. Two centuries ago, molten volcanic larva flowed here. It then solidified. The locals dubbed it the work of the devil. Hence the name Shetani.

  • Go on an outstanding game drive in the Tsavo.
  • View a population of endangered black rhinos thriving in Tsavo at the Ngulia Sanctuary.
  • Visit Lake Jipe on the Kenya-Tanzania border. Teeming with fish and aquatic birds, Lake Jipe is a joy.
  • Tsavo West is the most unlikely place for a WW1 site. Follow the footsteps of African World War veterans who fought here in the bundu (bush.)
