What to Expect on an Amboseli Safari

An Amboseli safari is built around two daily game drives timed to when the animals move, an early start after sunrise, and a late-afternoon drive into the early evening. The middle of the day is for lunch and rest at your lodge, out of the heat. Most guests spend two nights here, which gives you full game-driving days rather than a rushed in-and-out.

The wildlife is the reason people come. Amboseli holds some of the largest and best-studied elephant herds in Africa, and you’ll typically see big family groups crossing the open plains and feeding in the swamps at close range. Alongside them you can expect buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, hippo in the permanent swamps, and plenty of plains game, with lion, cheetah and hyena the main predators. Birdlife is exceptional, having well over 400 species, especially around the wetlands.

The signature moment is Kilimanjaro. On a clear morning, the snow-capped peak rises behind the herds for the classic Amboseli photograph,  and because the mountain usually clouds over by midday, your guide will position you early to catch it. It’s never guaranteed, but the dry-season dawns give you the best odds.

A typical short trip runs like this: pick-up from Nairobi or your coastal base, transfer to Amboseli, an afternoon game drive on arrival, a full day of morning and afternoon drives, then a final morning drive before heading back or on to your next park. All game viewing is in a pop-top 4×4 with a professional driver-guide, so you’re never self-navigating.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s included in an Amboseli safari package?

Our standard packages include park fees, accommodation, all game drives with a professional driver-guide, transport in a 4×4, and meals as specified per itinerary. International flights and personal extras are excluded. Each package page lists exactly what’s in and out.

Can I combine Amboseli with other parks?

Yes, definitely. Amboseli pairs naturally with Tsavo, the Maasai Mara, Lake Naivasha, and the coast, and can extend into Tanzania, Uganda or Rwanda on our longer routes. See our Amboseli-plus packages above, or ask us to build a custom combination.

Do you offer Amboseli safaris from Mombasa or Diani?

Yes. We run Amboseli trips starting from the coast by road, by train, and by flight, several of the packages above begin in Mombasa or Diani rather than Nairobi.
