Ol Pejeta Conservancy (Sweetwaters)

Ol Pejeta Conservancy is the premier black rhino sanctuary in East Africa. There are two Northern White Rhinos – the only ones of their kind – living at Ol Pejeta.

But Ol Pejeta also boasts lions, elephant herds and other large mammals.

How to get to Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Ol Pejeta is a four-hour road trip from Nairobi.

The other way to get there is to fly from Wilson Airport in Nairobi to Nanyuki Airport. Use Air Kenya or Safarilink.

Ol Pejeta is close to Samburu National Reserve. Consider combining both in one trip.

You can also use public transport from Nairobi to Nanyuki.

When to Visit Sweetwaters

Dry seasons are the best. June to September is nicely cool and dry. June to February is hot and dry but green.

October, April, and May are great if you are looking for cheaper rates. But there is a lot of rain. Use a Four wheel drive to visit at this time to avoid getting stuck in the mud.

Travel Tips within in Ol Pejeta

Visitors to Ol Pejeta pay park fees daily. Fees are $90 per non-resident, Sh 1400 per East African citizen, and $2600 per East African resident. Pay half for children.

What to wear to Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Ol Pejeta is located at a higher altitude though on the equator. It can be cold at night and in the early morning. Afternoons can be hot.

Arm yourself with good hiking boots, a long-sleeved shirt, a jumper, trousers, sunglasses, T-shirts, a sun hat, shorts, flip flops, and a rain jacket.

Ol Pejeta Attractions

  • Visit the Ol Pejeta Anti-Poaching unit canine officers. Learn how rangers train them to patrol Ol Pejeta in search of poachers. Play hide and seek with the dogs. Ol Pejeta canine rangers detain suspects, track them, and search them for ammo.
  • Team up with researchers to track and identify lions. They use identifiers like nose spots, whisker spots, and ear tears.
  • Ol Pejeta’s northern white rhinos live in an enclosure with no predators. Only two northern white rhinos still exist – Najin and Fatu. Hang out with these two VIPs.
  • Your 4 to 12-year-old children can play ranger for a day with Ol Pejeta’s Junior Ranger program. In the end, they say the ranger oath and receive a hat, certificate, and a pin.
  • Guests can run with Ol Pejeta’s rangers. Spot an elephant or rhino during this modest 5-7k run through a gentle landscape. Take a break if you need it. Drink fresh coffee after your run.
  • Explore Ol Pejeta on foot by walking or cycling with Ol Pejeta expert guides.
  • Bush dinners and sundowners are magical. Book one with your lodge.
  • Experience a thrilling ride with rhinos. It involves riding a horse (not a rhino!) as you view rhinos at a safe distance.
  • Visit the chimpanzee sanctuary.
