Masai Mara National Reserve

How to get to the Maasai Mara

Maasai Mara is in Narok County. Narok is a three-hour road trip from Nairobi. You can fly from Wilson Airport to the Mara. Your tour operator will make the arrangements.

When to Visit Maasai Mara Game Reserve

Rainfall patterns determine the availability of water and pasture.

When it is dry, seasonal rivers and watering holes dry up. Animals will congregate around the permanent rivers like Talek and Mara. When it is raining, wild animals are sparse and harder to see.

Visit when it is dry. July, August, September, and October is the high season. The wildebeest migration takes place at this time.

What to wear in the Mara

Maasai Mara is hot and dusty during the day. But nights can be cold.

You want to carry sweaters and jackets in addition to safari outfits. Don’t wear white. Go for neutral colors.

Sandals are okay in the lodge, but you need closed shoes for excursions.

Protect your skin with sunscreen and bug repellant. A hat will help too.
