How to get to Lake Naivasha
Lake Naivasha is a short road trip away from Nairobi. Take a bus from Nairobi to Naivasha and another bus from Naivasha town to the lakeside. Use public transport if you are alone or at a small party. Larger parties can hire a vehicle.
When to Visit Lake Naivasha
Animals are easier to find in the dry season of July-October. They meet near the remaining pasture and water. You can combine Lake Naivasha and Maasai Mara Game Reserve in the dry season.
Vegetation is lush in the rainy season (April and May). Prepare to witness animals give birth to young. Flowers are in bloom.
October to March is good for bird watching.

- Lake Naivasha offers some incredible bird watching. The best time for this is October-March. Migratory birds arrive in their thousands.
- Crescent Island Game Sanctuary is one of the best spots in Lake Naivasha. The secret island hosts impalas, giraffes, hippos, wildebeests, zebras, elands, waterbucks, and more than 200 species of birds.
- Boat riding, walking, and biking on Crescent Island are pleasant experiences.
- Boat tours on Lake Naivasha are a joy because of the bird flying over and the cool breeze moving you along.
- Oserian Wildlife Conservancy hosts 300 types of birds, grazers like rhino, zebra, impala, gazelle, and wildebeest, and hunters like leopards, cheetahs, caracals, hyenas, and servals.
- Crater Lake game Sanctuary hosts rare Colobus monkeys (black and white), buffalos, giraffes, zebras, 150 bird species, and walking safaris. Locals believe that Crater Lake has healing properties.
- Lake Nakuru is the perfect base for climbing Mt. Longonot. Mt. Longonot is a dormant volcano that is relatively easy to climb compared to other mountains.
- Visit the flamingos on Lake Elementaita.
- Drive to Ol Karia Geothermal Spa in Hell’s Gate. Dip into the large pools at Ol Karia.
- See the 1-million-year-old remains of early man at Kariandusi.
